Webinar for academia members recap

We recently held a webinar which was created exclusively for academia members

Did you miss it but you still want to learn how to:

  • Spend less time setting up your classroom
  • Decrease the overall costs of your teaching tools
  • Replace several expensive instruments
  • Use only one tool to teach a variety of electronic engineering skills

Then read on or watch the webinar HERE.

Today we’ll be sharing some benefits of Red Pitaya for use at universities. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If you clicked on this, then you are either a professor, an assistant, or a program director trying to figure our new ways to enhance your electrical engineering program. Well congratulations, you’ve come to the right place. We believe that Red Pitaya's STEMlab 125-10 is the most versatile teaching tool out there, and we are sure that it will make your life easier.

THE START OF RED PITAYA

In 2013, a group of engineers with 20 years of electronics design experience in hardware for particle accelerators got together and created the first Red Pitaya board. Red Pitaya was created with one important mission – to transform any home office or classroom into a professional engineering lab at a low price point. We are proud to say that with Red Pitaya you can replace many expensive lab instruments and have excellent price performance. In the past seven years, we have worked with more than 30,000 satisfied customers.

RED PITAYA’S PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

The Red Pitaya product portfolio has expanded over the years, as a result of our clients’ needs. Nevertheless, for academic settings, we always recommend our low-cost STEMlab board, which, like all Red Pitaya models, comes with 2 super-fast inputs and outputs, a web-accessible GUI and open-source software, and other functionalities. There are many applications available, and the product can be used out of the box as an oscilloscope, signal generator, spectrum analyzer, Bode analyzer, logic analyzer, and LCR meter. We also have a dedicated marketplace where free-of-charge open-source applications developed by our community members are available for immediate use with a single click.

Red Pitaya combines a dual-core ARM processor, FPGA technology, and supports the high-speed signal acquisition, processing, and signal generation. It is an ethernet-controlled instrument with additional extension possibilities.

WHICH VERSION IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOUR PROJECT?

We offer a few versions of this platform, with the main difference being ADC resolution, so it is easy to identify the most suitable one for your project. The most basic kit is the starter kit, which comes with all the accessories you need to set up your engineering lab. The kit includes a Red Pitaya STEMlab 125-10 board, a 16 GB SD card, ethernet cable and power supply.

The diagnostic kit also includes an acrylic case, 8 logic analyzer probes, 2 oscilloscope probes, 2 SMA to BNC adapters, 2 50-ohm terminals and 2 SMA T adapters.

Our most advanced kit is the EDU pack, which in addition to the diagnostic kit includes a sensor extension module compatible with the popular and wide range of sensors available from SeedStudio.

WHY RED PITAYA?

At this point, you're probably wondering why Red Pitaya is the right choice for you and what additional value will it bring to your classroom or program.

Here are the main points that we think will make your life easier:

  • Powerful, compact HW platform
  • Replaces several expensive instruments such as oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, LCR meter etc.
  • Lots of step-by-step instructional videos available for free
  • Modern web-based documentation platform with quick start guide and best practices
  • Simple connectivity and quick accessibility

  • Control over SCPI: LabView, Matlab, Python etc.
  • Use only one tool to learn a variety of electronic engineering skills, from FPGA programming to circuits and electronics basics
  • Spend less time setting up your classroom
  • Decrease the overall costs of your teaching tools

UNIVERSITIES THAT TRUST RED PITAYA

Many universities around the world use Red Pitaya as a teaching tool in their classrooms. Some universities use Red Pitaya in their laboratories to replace several more expensive instruments. Other universities give their electrical engineering students one Red Pitaya each to use during classes. This makes the teaching process very hands-on and speeds up the learning curve, as students don't have to take turns in the laboratory and can follow live examples.

LET’S GET TO THE POINT

At this point, you're probably thinking about costs and presenting this to your budget committee, but don't worry! After working with so many universities around the world, we understand your needs and limitations, so we've prepared a pricing model that will help you get this approved. Stay tuned for the next slide, where we present the benefits and discounts available exclusively to people in academia.

Students will use Red Pitaya for 3-4 years on average, and we are proud to say that the cost of Red Pitaya per student comes down to an amazingly low €40 per year. That's less than the cost of photocopying one book!

Furthermore, we've learned from experience that students value their new instrument much more if they contribute to the purchase. This will also lift some of the burden off the university's budget and will cost students much less than buying a book, for example. The added benefit is that they won't actually have to buy a book since Red Pitaya comes with free examples and teaching material. We usually suggest a 20-40% contribution from students. The rest of the price can be covered by the university's laboratory budget.

One possibility is welcome packages for students. Every electrical engineering student receives a package with a Red Pitaya and accessories at the beginning of their studies and is able to use it for the duration of their studies. Red Pitaya becomes a trusted learning partner for each student, and they can even take it with them to their first jobs after graduation.

Some universities that don’t have a large enough budget to buy Red Pitayas for their students have the option of making them available at the campus store, where students can buy them at a discounted price.

BENEFITS

And now to the important stuff, the benefits! We know how important it is to test the instrument’s performance on-site before you buy it. Because we want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase, we are offering a 3-month Red Pitaya STEMlab125-10 tryout option. You will receive the STEMlab 125-10 starter kit, and we will provide you with all the technical support you need.

We also offer people in academia an exclusive discount on all STEMlab 125-10 kits. This is our contribution to improving the education of future engineers – or as we like to say, “Red Pitaya creates real engineers.”

Thank you for reading through this webinar recap. We’d love to support you in your efforts to make your electrical engineering program better and more efficient. If you have any questions with regard to the functionalities or pricing, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
