## Crucial Hardware Adjustments for Gen 2 Migration

When upgrading an existing setup from an original-generation board to a Gen 2 platform, design and engineering teams must evaluate several key physical and electrical updates detailed in our official migration guidelines:

**1. Universal USB-C Connectivity Upgrade**

All legacy peripheral connectors on the rear of the board have been modernized. The power input, serial console, and USB host connectors have transitioned from micro-USB and USB-A to universal USB-C ports. Furthermore, the S1 and S2 data connectors have been upgraded from SATA to USB-C form factors. Mechanical chassis designs incorporating Red Pitaya boards should review these shifts alongside slight adjustments to the SD card slot location. ![STEMlab 125-14 PRO Gen 2 board](https://content.redpitaya.com/hs-fs/hubfs/STEMlab%20125-14%20PRO%20Gen%202%20board.jpg?width=1200&height=627&name=STEMlab%20125-14%20PRO%20Gen%202%20board.jpg)
**2. External Clock Selection via ADC CLK SEL**

While the position and voltage range of external clock connections remain consistent, Gen 2 boards incorporate a vital new ADC CLK SEL pin on the E2 extension connector. This pin dictates the active clock source:

- **GND:** Selects the external clock supplied via the EXT ADC CLK pins.
- **3V3 or Floating (NC):** Selects the onboard internal oscillator.
- **Engineering Warning:** Custom extension boards designed for original-generation hardware may automatically pull this pin to GND, inadvertently forcing the Gen 2 board into external-clock mode. Ensure your design holds this pin at 3V3 or leaves it floating if internal clock operation is required.

**3. Negative Supply Voltage Shift (-3.4 V to -5 V)**

The negative supply rail has been upgraded from -3.4 V on original-generation boards to -5 V on Gen 2 models. Engineering teams must review all custom daughterboards, shields, and connected circuitry attached to the negative supply rail to verify they are fully rated for -5 V operation to prevent component stress or failure.

**4. Z7020 Model GPIO Logic Levels & Bank 13 Configuration**

For models utilizing the Zynq-7020 SoC, the auxiliary GPIO pins (DIO8, DIO9, and DIO10 on the E1 connector) operate at 2.5 V logic on Gen 2 boards, compared to 3.3 V on original models. This 2.5 V level optimizes high-speed differential communication lines (DIO11 to DIO18 on E3).

- If your application strictly requires 3.3 V logic levels across Bank 13 (covering DIO8-DIO10 and fast differential pairs), the bank voltage can be modified. However, please note that changing Bank 13 to 3.3 V may reduce high-speed communication performance. Hardware modifications are required; contact support@redpitaya.com for assistance.

**5. Enhanced Multi-Board Synchronization**

For multi-board synchronization, Gen 2 transitions the recommendation away from legacy S1/S2 SATA connections and toward the EXT ADC CLK interface on the E2 connector. Utilizing Red Pitaya Click Shields equipped with onboard clock buffers prevents clock and trigger signal degradation across multiple FPGA passes, delivering vastly superior synchronization stability. Legacy synchronization via S1/S2 remains possible on Gen 2, but requires a physical hardware modification.
